This Week’s Review
Released by Entangled Teen
Let’s just get this out of the way first. I loved it. I rate it 5 of 5 stars… this book was everything I love about the genre. I read it in just a couple days and was super bummed when it was over. I even read the first chapter tease at the end of the novel (something I don’t like to normally do because I’m always bummed when I can’t continue). But, I couldn’t help myself, I just got sucked into this world. *big breath*
Whew! Now that I got that off of my chest, here’s a bit more information about the book.
The premise is spot on for a YA fantasy. Typical sixteen-year-old Gia Kearns discovers she’s part of an elite magical group that is tasked with protecting both the human and magical worlds. Now, she must come to terms with her destiny, defeat an evil wizard, and protect her family, all while also figuring out which magical hottie she’s most in love with.
I absolutely loved this book. Drake has a strong grasp of how to tell a story and her characters are multi-dimensional and vivid. There are no boring peeps in this novel, the characters are interesting and unique, and everyone played their part. The pacing is just right and keeps you moving steadily throughout the novel. It’s obvious Drake has a clear understanding of what makes a YA fantasy novel great and steadily feeds the reader the perfect mix of action, dialogue, backstory, and yes, romance.
Though there were moments of tension and times in which I cringed for a character’s mishaps, I found myself totally invested in the story and wanting more.
Overall, the hotties were hot, the villains were villainous, and the good were true to form. And, even though this is the first in a series, there is enough wrap up to be happy with the ending.
I’m just glad the book two, Guardian of Secrets is out now. I’ll be heading to my bookstore soon to pick it up!
