Never Too Old for YA

Sign spotted by YA Highway contributor Sarah Enni (www.sarahenni.com) in an Olympia, WA bookstore.

Now that my #YA novel, STRUCK BY LOVE is winding down in edits, I’m back on the writing trail with my next book. This one (THE MIRROR WALKER) is also #YA, but tows a more magical realism line. It is only my second #YA novel, but I’m discovering that I thoroughly enjoy writing in this particular genre—which is a surprise for me since everything I’ve ever written prior has been for adult eyes only, if you catch my meaning 😉

But that’s fine by me because since I started writing for young adults, I am growing as a writer, I am evolving. And, I’m realizing that writing for the #YA crowd pushes me to be better at my craft. It challenges my skills, and everything I have learned thus far, and shows me a world I want to explore. I mean, what’s better than touching the minds of youth, of sharing ideas with people who are still trying to figure it all out? I remember when I was in junior high and high school, how important books were to me. I remember my influencers (Knowles, Perkins-Gilman, Orwell) and I still have the books that shaped my literary existence (Animal Farm, 1984, Frankenstein). Worlds were shown to me through literature, cultures were shared, people were met, and various shades of life were lived through pages.

Worlds were shown to me through literature, cultures were shared, people were met, and various shades of life were lived through pages, some with happy endings, and some terribly tragic. But all with a point. All with a purpose. All with a way to touch my mind, my heart, and shape me into what I am today.

Why hadn’t I thought to do the same with my writing?

I am not sure why it has taken me so long to write #YA. But of one thing, I am certain. I am a better writer today because I took the leap and decided to write a #YA novel. And, you can bet reading it makes me a better person, as well. 🙂
